Irinotecan is a cancer medication, which is a semisynthetic derivative of Camptothecin, an alkaloid extract from plants such as Camptotheca acuminata or is chemically synthesized. In chemical terms, it is a semisynthetic analogue of the natural alkaloid Camptothecin.
Irinotecan is an Antineoplastic agent. It works by interfering with the production of proteins necessary for cancer cell growth and reproduction. Irinotecan interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body by preventing DNA from unwinding by inhibition of Topoisomerase.
